That's my very general suggestion, ...Hi Tanner! That's my very general suggestion, especially aimed at parents of young kids starting lessons (7 or under). Generally kids that young will not retain most of what they learn at a 30-minute weekly lesson without some parental assistance. Also, early on kids usually need some help practicing and unless the parent already plays the instrument, they need to observe the lesson to be able to help prevent early bad habits. In B.'s case, he's been taking for a while now, retains information and new skills really well (from what I can tell!), and is a bit older. If his teacher thinks he's doing well on his own for lessons, I would totally trust that. Also, you're a musician, so you will understand the assignments better than some parents.

Sometimes younger kids do better without mom or dad in the lesson, too--either because the child is more reserved or sometimes because mom or dad is a little TOO involved in the lesson. :-) In those cases, I'd recommend saving the last 5 minutes of the lesson for the teacher to show the parent what they worked on that day, with the student's help, if possible. And I have also (rarely) had older kids who HAD to have a parent in the lesson to accomplish anything at all.Two Moons Musichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11726701100077829592noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7900607659681380798.post-78760095393991265402009-09-04T09:34:26.144-04:002009-09-04T09:34:26.144-04:00Why do you suggest attending their lessons? This past year we attended Bram's (actually inside the room with him during the lesson) about half the time, but we're afraid that he's likely to be more reserved while we're there. He just started with a new teacher last week (who is FABULOUS!) and while we sat in last week, we had just about made the decision not to sit in on future lessons. We'd love to hear your perspective, thanks!Tanner Lovelacehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02674404809167892499noreply@blogger.com
